ABCs of: Peri-operative care
All surgeries need to be preceded by a pre-operative assessment. This is inclusive of pre-operative history mainly focusing on:
- Past surgical history
- Past anaesthetic history
- Has the patient had anaesthesia before?
- If so were there any issues
- Intraoperative or postoperative issues
- Drug history
- Any drug allergies?
- Some medications require stopping or altering prior to surgery (anticoagulants).
- Drug history
- Family history
- Malignant hyperthermia or other adverse reactions during surgery
