Surgical Spotlight 4: Anesthetics and Pre-Operative Assessments

Professor G. D. Puri graduated with his degree in medicine (MBBS) from MDU Rohtak in 1979. He went on to receive his MD and PhD from PGIMER (Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education & Research, Chandigarh) in 1982 and 1994, respectively. Moreover, he holds an MMed in Anesthesia from the Singapore Medical University.

Prof. G. D. Puri currently holds the position of Dean (Academic) and Dean (Research) at PGIMER. He is also the Professor & Head of the Department of Anesthesia & Intensive Care at PGIMER. He is the editor-in-chief of the “Journal of Peri-operative Echocardiography”. Throughout the span of his career, he has over 160 peer-reviewed publications, including 80 international publications, and has over 1200 citations.

He conceptualized and pioneered the “Perioperative and critical care Transoesophageal echocardiography hands-on teaching program” and conducted this annual workshop for the last ten years at PGIMER; to benefit peri-operative physicians, critical care physicians, cardiologists and surgeons. Prof. G. D. Puri was involved with setting up intensive care facilities for the COVID-19 hospital set-up at the Nehru Hospital Extension at PGIMER and has been running the COVID-19 ICUs since March 2020 – with more than 700 critically ill COVID patients treated in the past year. In addition, he guided the management of approximately 4000 moderate to severe COVID-19 patients as the Head of the COVID-19 management team.
